Pipe markers are used to display the function, contents and flow directions of pipes. The markers are important to identify hazardous substances in pipelines and prevent incidents, as well as for non-hazardous substances to make the process transparent. This prevents doubt about the presence of hazardous substances.
In most countries, there are laws and standards that require pipes containing hazardous materials to be identified with markers. These markers are part of workplace safety and health signage. Although the requirements are very similar, there are differences from country to country. Some examples:
There is also the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), a worldwide system for the classification, marking, and packaging of chemical substances and mixtures. Although many countries have fully adopted and intimated the GHS, it is important to note that the degree of implementation may vary from country to country.
The main ISO standard related to pipe markers is ISO 20560-1. This first part of ISO 20560 focuses specifically on piping systems containing hazardous materials. It is a complete guide to the uniform marking of piping systems. For shipping, there is ISO 14726. These are better known as IMO pipe markers.
Other commonly used standards include DIN2403 (Germany), BS1710 (United Kingdom), and ASME A13.1-2015 (United States).
