Escape route marking and Low Location Lighting for crane vessel Sleipnir of Heerema Marine Contractors

Is it a platform? Is it a ship? Is it a floating village with even a sports hall on board? Is it a faucet? Does it hold the lifting record for crane vessels and is it the largest in the world?

Yes, the Sleipnir from Heerema Marine Contractors has it all.

Blomsma Signs & Safety has installed an escape route guidance system on behalf of Heerema Marine Contractors on this impressive crane vessel. Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) are essential at Heerema to guarantee the safety of staff and visitors, which is why the requirements within the Heerema organization are also high.

An essential part of security is communication, through text or through images. Based on this vision, Blomsma Signs & Safety has been commissioned to upgrade the existing escape route signage on the SSCV Sleipnir, by simultaneously improving orientation and safety for staff in regular operating situations, but especially in the event of an alarm or calamities.  The presence of a quality escape route guidance system is essential and can save lives in emergency situations.

Project approach and scope

The scope of the project for the Sleipnir included:

  • 4,500 meters of photoluminescent “Low Location Lighting” including door markings and escape route references in the corridors and stairwells from lowerdeck to the bridge.
  • 59 Escape Plan orientation panels format A1 and A2 at strategic positions.
  • Escape route signage to the various muster and embarkation areas.
  • Emergency escape route signage from the Cabins on the kick panel doors.
  • As-built documentation of the Low Location Lighting, including light measurement testing and certification.

The starting points for the project with regard to legislation and regulations are:

  • IMO Res. A.752 (18) – Guidelines for the evaluation, testing and application of LLL on passenger ships
  • SOLAS Convention 2004 – Means of escape – Marking of escape routes
  • ISO 15370:2021 – Low Location Lighting (LLL) on passenger ships
  • ISO 16069 SWGS – Safety Way Guidance Systems
  • ISO 24409-2:2014 Ships and marine technology – Design, location and use of shipboard safety signs, fire control plan signs, safety notices and safety markings
  • ISO 17398:2004 Safety colors and safety signs – Classification, performance & durability of safety signs.
  • MODU CODE 9.4 Code for the construction and equipment of mobile offshore drilling units, 2009 (2009 MODU CODE) (Resolution A.1023(26)) Chapter 09.04 Means of escape

About Heerema and the Sleipnir

The Sleipnir is a semi-submersible crane vessel from Heerema Marine Contractors that was built in 2019 in Singapore. The name is derived from the eight-legged horse Sleipnir from Norse mythology. The design consists of two parallel pontoons, each with four columns, with the working deck on top. The Sleipnir has two cranes, each with a capacity of 10,000 tons and a total capacity of 20,000 tons, making it the largest and most durable semi-submersible crane vessel in the world, after the Thialf was for a long time.
