Wayland Energy Geothermal Bergschenhoek – Safety signage update

Safety signage update at Wayland Energy Geothermie Bergschenhoek

Wayland Energy’s geothermal plant in Bergschenhoek has been supplying sustainable heat to greenhouse farms since 2018. Blomsma Signs & Safety was asked to update the safety signage at this location. Since there were already signs in place in a number of places, the aim was to update the safety signs in an economical manner by means of new signs, enforcing the (correct) signs present and supplementing missing signs.

Project approach and scope

A site survey was used as the basis for the realization of the project. In this, the scope was defined:

  • Marking of emergency stops with symbols according to ISO 7010
  • Selection of safety signs for hazardous materials / NORM storage facilities
  • Marking of storage (tanks) of harmful / hazardous substances based on ISO 20560-2
  • Wellhead identification markings
  • Impression sign explosion risk areas (Ex)
  • Highlight markings on pipes based on ISO 20560-1
  • Safety map according to NEN1414:2019

Blomsma Signs & Safety completed this project based on the following principles of applicable laws, regulations and standards:

  • Directive 92/58/EEC – “concerning the minimum requirements for the provision of safety and/or health signs at work”
  • Working Conditions Decree – Chapter 8, Section 2 “Safety and health signs”
  • Working conditions regulation – Chapter 8 “Safety and health signs”
  • ISO 20560 “Safety information for the contents of pipelines and tanks”
  • ISO 3864 “Safety colors and safety signs”
  • ISO 7010 “Safety colors and signs – Registered safety signs”
  • ISO 17398 “Safety colors and safety signs – Classification, performance and
  • classification, performance and durability of safety signs”
  • ISO/TS 20559 “Safety colors and safety signs- Guideline for the development and use of a safety sign system”
  • PGS and ATEX Directives
  • EU-GHS (CLP), EU/2008/1272

Implementation

The Blomsma Signs & Safety project engineer also provided all documents, permit applications, work planning, management of the 3M™ Certified Safety Signs Installers™ assembly team, quality control, as-built signage and handover in this project.

About Wayland Energy Geothermal Site Bergschenhoek

Wayland Energy Bergschenhoek was the first location where Wayland Energy generated renewable energy from a geothermal well. In collaboration with partner AgroEnergy, Wayland supplies energy to several horticultural companies in the area. The well extracts hot water from a depth of no less than two kilometers from various sandstone features. This generates a large volume with which we can supply heat to customers. Hot water is pumped up and sent to the greenhouses via a hot water network. After this, the cooled water is pumped back into the ground to be reheated by the earth’s core. The amount of heat produced exceeds 100,000 MWh annually.
