TRIAS Westland Geothermal site – Safety signage

Geothermal energy used for heating companies Westland

Locating hot water 2.3 kilometres underground, pumping it up and using it to supply sustainable energy to greenhouse horticultural businesses in the Westland area. With that aim in mind, the geothermal energy project Trias Westland was started up as a collaborative venture between HVC, Capturam and Royal FloraHolland. The above-ground systems are being made by VB Group Geo projects. Blomsma Signs & Safety has been awarded the contract for the entire safety signage, thereby setting a new standard for safety signage at geothermal sites.

Plenty of sustainable energy can be found in the ground in the Westland area. The ground contains natural aquifers and the deeper these water-bearing layers are, the hotter the water is. The hot water is pumped up and a heat exchanger is used to transfer the energy to a heating network, allowing it to be distributed to the consumers. After use, the cooled water is pumped back down into the ground where the heat of the Earth’s core can warm it up again. This geothermal energy connection means that growers do not have to use nearly as much natural gas. On top of that, geothermal heat is inexhaustible and using it will cut down the CO2 emissions in Greenport drastically. The air quality will improve too, as less nitrogen will be emitted and dependence on fossil fuels will be reduced.

Reason and scope of the project

To improve safety for the staff, other stakeholders and the surroundings, high-performance signage was needed for safety, escape routes and health risks. Blomsma Signs & Safety carried out an on-site inventory and drew up a signage plan that created a clear picture of the desired situation and served as a starting point for the realization work and the future maintenance of the safety signage. This method ensures that a comprehensive system will be set up at the site for the safety signage, supported through our professional expertise and experience.

Principles

The implementation is based on the following legislation and regulations:

  • EU Directive 92-58 (Safety signage and escape route signage)
  • Dutch Working Conditions Decree Chapter 8 (Safety signage and health risk signage)
  • Dutch Working Conditions Provisions Chapter 8 (Safety signage and health risk signage)
  • Mining Act
  • Buildings Decree
  • ISO(DIS)-20560 (Norm for pipe marking and tank marking, under development)
  • NEN 3050 Pipeline system marking
  • NEN 1414 Evacuation plan signs
  • PGS and ATEX directives
  • EU-GHS (CLP), EU/2008/1272
  • Road Traffic Act
  • ISO3864 (Safety colours and safety symbols)
  • ISO7010 (Registered safety symbols)
  • ISO17398 (Classification, performance and sustainability of safety signage)

Scope

The scope of the safety signage comprised marking the pipes (PolyesPro® pipe markings) and storage tanks, escape route signage, safety zone signs, evacuation plan signs and the signs for the firefighting and rescue equipment. A team of qualified Blomsma engineers, trained by 3M, carried out the work during the construction period safely and successfully, without incidents.

Blomsma Signs & Safety realized the following components:

  • Sign audit and drawing up signage plans
  • Escape route marking
  • Evacuation plan signage
  • Safety zone signs and location signs
  • Explosion Hazardous area impression signs
  • Pipe markings
  • Tank markings
  • Firefighting and rescue equipment signage
