Blomsma Signs & Safety has delivered a complete Platform Safety Signage System for the new offshore production platform N05-A, commissioned by ONE-Dyas B.V. The N05-A platform is now located in the Dutch North Sea.
Safety plays a crucial role on offshore platforms. N05-A is classified as a Normally Unattended Installation (NUI) and is only accessed for maintenance and inspection activities. However, the platform is equipped with full accommodation facilities for personnel. A safety signage system (in accordance with ISO/TS 20559:2020) is an essential part of onboard safety due to its visual communication function. It also serves as a clear aid during operations, enabling quick identification of systems, risks, and processes.
''The main goal of the project was to relieve our client ONE-Dyas by delivering a complete and functional signage system. Specifically for pipe marking, we ensured that all markings complied with the requirements of ISO 20560-1. The ONE-Dyas platform is the first in the Netherlands to be equipped according to this standard''.
ISO 20560-1:2024Blomsma engineers began by developing a signage plan and determining quantities for pipe marking based on the architectural drawings and the 3D model of the platform. All safety signage was designed and drafted in CAD drawings per deck and by category. These sign plan drawings were reviewed by ONE-Dyas and formed the basis for the production, delivery, installation, and finalization of all signage. The drawings are also integrated into the maintenance system of the N05-A platform.
The scope of the ONE-Dyas N05-A platform project included:
Legal and regulatory framework:
The main goal of the project was to unburden our client ONE-Dyas, with a fully functional and comprehensive signage system as the core deliverable. Specifically for pipe marking, we ensured that all markings complied with the requirements of ISO 20560-1. The ONE-Dyas platform is the first in the Netherlands to be equipped according to this standard. ISO 20560-1 provides guidelines for the identification and marking of pipe contents and associated hazards.
Tank markings not only feature GHS hazard pictograms but also include a colored medium bar matching the pipe marking colors. Through careful planning in the signage plan, innovations such as the change of the colored title bar on safety zone signs to a white title bar were implemented to avoid color conflicts with tank markings.
The ISO/TS 20559:2020 standard for the design and implementation of safety signage systems brings together various standards—from ISO 7010 (safety symbols) to ISO 20560 (pipe and tank marking) and ISO 24409 (safety-related drawings). Color schemes are harmonized; for example, the red used for fire prevention symbols matches the red medium color on markings for fire water pipes and firewater tanks—making them easily recognizable. In close cooperation with ONE-Dyas, our specialists designed and installed a fully integrated and harmonized safety signage system.
The entire project was carried out at the renowned construction yard of HSM Offshore Energy in Schiedam. Our team of experienced engineers, designers, technicians, and installers successfully implemented the complete safety signage system towards the end of the topside construction phase. Thanks to our many years of offshore experience, we understand the importance of correctly installed safety signage in this industry.
Our project approach covered all phases—from initial engineering and design to final production—all executed from our headquarters in Zoetermeer. This involved detailed planning, regulatory-compliant design tailored to the North Sea environment, and the production of high-quality safety signage and pipe markings. Our commitment to complete project relief ensured that every aspect was executed with precision, underlining our dedication to safety and supporting the successful operation of the ONE-Dyas N05-A platform.
ONE-Dyas B.V. is the largest privately-owned offshore gas and oil exploration and production company in the Netherlands. We are at the forefront of sustainability and technological innovation, aiming to make a positive and lasting contribution to the energy transition.
The production of gas and oil in the North Sea contributes to the national economy by utilizing local services, products, and knowledge, while also generating significant tax revenues. In the Netherlands, at least 70% of gas revenues return to the Dutch treasury. Local production also supports energy security by reducing dependency on imported fuels. Moreover, it helps meet climate targets by minimizing emissions and adhering to the highest environmental standards in the industry.
Our operations span the entire lifecycle of offshore assets in the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom. A leading example is the N05-A development project in Dutch and German waters, which will be the first of its kind to integrate natural gas, wind energy, and green hydrogen. We are also actively exploring future energy technologies such as carbon capture and storage, and green hydrogen.
